How does it work?

The entire karaoke is packaged like a downloadable Java game. To play the song, simply install it and start the karaoke as you would a game. No further access to the wireless internet is needed after installation.

The animated GIF on the left gives an idea how the words are highlighted. The software plays the music as a MIDI track in the background.

Make sure you try the version for your phone brand. If that doesn't work properly then try the "Generic" version. If you still have no luck, let me know and I'll see what I can do about fixing it. There are hundreds of cellphone types out there and some have some unique issues.

Phone requirements

The karaokes will run on most Nokia, Samsung, SonyEricsson or Motorola cellphones that run Java (and most do). The generic version should run on almost any phone including PDA's with Java such as the Blackberry.

The specific manufacturer versions can provide a better experience because they take care of two issues: keeping the screen lit up and a better synchonization between words and music. A preset advance compensates for the time taken by the phone to start the MIDI track playing which varies slightly according to the phone brand. The generic version should work on most modern cellphones and has a preset advance of 250 milliseconds (better slightly fast than too slow). The IPhone doesn't support Java yet so they won't work on that device.

Tip: By pressing the "1" button the karaoke will stop and display the current timing advance. This can be adjusted and then the midlet can be restarted by pressing "1" again (this is really something used for testing to experiment with the advance). Let me know if you think the advance should be different than the preset. Also let me know if there are any formatting problems with the images or words.

Restrictions

None of these karaokes may be offered for sale as they are freeware.
